Saving Money: Kids Cakes Decorating Made Easy

This is one of several posts about decorating your own cakes. What about decorating a cake?  I can tell you that it's not that hard. After literally dozens of cakes, they all got ate no matter how they looked, but most turned out very nice. I always like to look at the cakes whenever I go somewhere like the Walmart bakery. These are homemade versions are just as cute as many of the professional cake decorators you see on display.

Growing Your Own Salad Greens

With the coming spring weather, my thoughts are more and more on fresh salad. Fresh, green, tender lettuces, crisp radishes, tender young green onions (scallions). For the last few years we live in a house that we cannot garden conventionally, but I am experimenting with container gardening, hydroponics, and aquaponics. There are also community gardens for people needing a few feet of dirt to plant.

Nothing is easier than growing greens of any kind. Salad greens ...

Baked Potatoes As Dinner

I passed on some recipes using Mac & Cheese box dinners that I gave to a friend who didn’t cook. Over a couple of years, Becky picked my brain about cooking. She never learned when she was living at home. I assured her if she could cook mac & cheese she could bake a potato. These are much healthier than Mac & Cheese box dinners and as easy.

How to bake a potato:

1. Buy russet potatoes, clean them well with a scrub brush.

2. ...

Choices That Determine Food Cost

If you want to lower your food budget, think about the type of dishes you eat. My husband believes we need meat for every meal, but that can drive up the cost of the food quite a bit. Most our meals do contain meat, but I usually use meat in casserole-type recipes rather than as a main dish. For instance if I make oven-fried chicken I will need at 8-10 pieces but if I make fried rice for example I could get by with a leg quarter ...

Make a Cabbage Connection

I love cabbage, but few people have that sweet feeling for it as me. I don’t really have a lot of different recipes but I do have my go to recipes. There is much to celebrate about the lowly cabbage. In northern countries that have a very short growing season it is one dependable vegetable. It is a super vegetable when it comes to fighting cancer and heart healthy. It also is low-fat and low-calorie.

Many people swear by cabbage soup for losing weight. I ...

Parent's Life Recap

I wrote in an earlier post how my parents survived the early years of raising six children. This hopefully will be a condensed version of the earlier post.

  1. My Daddy worked all the time. He worked all day at work and then came home to work in the garden and yard. In the fall and winter he worked part-time on the weekends for extra money. In the spring he picked and sold strawberries from the garden, selling ...

A Parent's Life

I love thinking back to when I was a young child. Things were so easy for us kids. We played outside all day. When we weren’t running around then we were sitting in the shade of a large maple tree, the air fragrant with lilacs and honeysuckles in the cool breeze while we made clover necklaces and sharing all our big dreams for the future.

My parents’ life wasn’t so idyllic. They were impoverished with six children to support. Daddy worked for low wages at 50 miles ...

WHERE DO YOU SHOP?

I talk to a lot of people about grocery shopping. Everyone knows I volunteer for Cooking Matters at the Store,  www.cookingmatters.org or http://www.shoppingmatters.net/, and they want my opinion about buying groceries. I've had a couple of people tell me they shop mostly at Dollar General or the Dollar Tree. I do think you can eat healthy from food bought at this type of store.

First the reasons why these people shop at these stores is because they have no car and ...

Party Food: Part II

In the earlier post was my recipe for Hot Cheese Dip. Today I will explain how I make Sub sandwiches. They are good for parties (like the Super Bowl) or an easy travel food.

Ingredients: You will need a loaf of unsliced bread like French bread, sliced lunch meat, cheese, sliced onions, sliced tomatoes, pickles slices, lettuce, olives, pepper slices, lettuce leaves or shredded iceberg, or anything else you like on a sandwich.

As far as condiments: I like to use Italian dressing, but ...
